Joyce wa Mama has taken the Kikuyu benga music by storm since her entry to the music industry ten years ago. The soft-spoken lady has continued to enjoy a growing fan base with the release of hit after hit.
The latest ‘wendo wi cama’ (love is sweet) collabo with Samidoh has been a hit trending at number one on Youtube. Her other popular songs are ‘Wendo waku ndituragia’ and ‘wari wakwa’.
Joyce was born in Kongoini village in Kiharu, Murang’a County with her sister Jackie Mathia. She is mother to a seven-year-old son, Telvin Mathia, discloses that she was introduced to music by renowned benga musician Wangari wa Kabera in 2009.She says that the musician housed her when she came to Nairobi to seek greener pastures.
She acknowledges Wa Kabera’s role in her career after she sang as a back-up singer in her band before joining John Njagi. She refutes claims that she had been married to John Njagi, adding that their relationship was only in music that they did together.
Joyce Wa Mama has, however, denied her popular songs bashing men target Gukena FM sports presenter Munyeki Sonko the Second, who is her baby daddy. The two met when Munyeki was a radio presenter at KBC and Joyce was starting off her music career.Together, they sired a boy now seven years old, and Wa Mama says they are in good terms with the presenter.
It is is in the public domain that Joyce minces no words when attacking men in her songs. This could be the reason Munyeki feels that on of her songs is meant to bash him for leaving her after fathering a son with her.
“After seven months pregnant is when she came back,” he said. “The next thing that followed was a song bashing me called ‘Wajogothaga Niki’ (Why did you seduce me and leave me when I got pregnant?). That song was directed at me.”
Both admit that their love died, but say they are still the best of friends. Also, they do not co-parent.
